Where To Trek Mountain Gorillas?

Today, about 1,063 mountain gorillas live in the wild—an amazing recovery from the 1980s, when fewer than 300 remained. This success is thanks to hardworking conservation teams and tourists whose visits help fund protection.

Most mountain gorillas—around 604—live in the Virunga Massif, a chain of beautiful parks shared by Rwanda, the DR Congo, and Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park. The rest, about 459, are found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, based on the 2018 census, with a new count that began in May 2025 still in progress.
